How Impact Glass Actually Works (And Why It Cracks But Does Not Fall Out)

The short answer: impact glass is two sheets of glass permanently bonded to a tough plastic interlayer. When something hits it hard enough, the glass layers crack — but the interlayer holds the fragments in place, so the opening stays sealed. Keeping the building envelope closed is the entire point.

Why a broken window is a structural problem

It is tempting to think of a broken window as a glass problem. During a hurricane it is a structural one.

While a house is sealed, wind flows around it. The moment an opening fails on the windward side, wind enters and pressurises the interior. That internal pressure pushes outward on the roof and walls at the same time the wind is pulling on them from outside. The two loads add together.

This is why building codes treat openings as part of the structure, and why a single failed window can lead to losing a roof.

What is inside the glass

A laminated impact unit is a sandwich. Two lites of glass, and between them a polymer interlayer — commonly polyvinyl butyral, or a stiffer ionoplast interlayer in higher-performance products.

The interlayer is bonded to the glass under heat and pressure, so it is not a film applied afterwards. It is structural. When the glass cracks, the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer rather than falling away, and the cracked assembly still spans the opening and still carries pressure.

That is the behaviour people find counter-intuitive. Impact glass is not unbreakable, and no reputable installer should tell you it is. It is designed to break in a way that keeps working.

Most impact units are also insulated, meaning the laminated assembly is paired with another lite and a sealed air or gas space for thermal performance. The impact resistance comes from the lamination; the energy performance comes from the insulated construction, coatings and gas fill.

How products get tested

Certification is a sequence, and the order matters.

Impact. Openings within roughly the lower thirty feet of a building are tested with a large missile — a length of dimensional lumber fired at the glass, simulating structural debris. Openings above that height are tested with a small missile: a burst of steel spheres at much higher speed, simulating roof gravel and small debris carried aloft.

Pressure. The unit is loaded to its rated positive and negative design pressure and has to hold.

Cyclic loading. The already-damaged unit is then put through thousands of pressure reversals, simulating the hours of buffeting after the initial strike.

Nationally this follows the ASTM E1886 and E1996 standards. Inside Miami-Dade and Broward's HVHZ, products are tested to Miami-Dade's own protocols instead. Either way, surviving the first hit is not enough — the cyclic phase is where marginal assemblies fail.

The frame is half the product

A great deal of marketing focuses on glass. In practice, failures often happen at the edges.

The glass has to stay in the frame, the frame has to stay in the wall, and the fasteners have to carry the load into the structure. That is why impact windows are certified as complete assemblies — glass, frame, hardware and anchoring tested together — and why the installation method is part of the approval rather than a detail left to the installer.

It is also why swapping in a different anchor, or fastening into the wrong substrate, can invalidate an otherwise properly rated product. Installation is not separate from performance.

Aluminium or vinyl frames

Both are used in South Florida. Aluminium is stiffer, which allows narrower sightlines and larger spans, and is common on big openings such as sliding glass doors and picture windows. Vinyl conducts less heat and can be a better thermal performer.

The right answer depends on opening size, design pressure at your address, and appearance. It is a specification decision, not a universal ranking.

What you get the rest of the time

Storm performance is the reason for the code requirement, but it is not what most homeowners notice day to day.

The interlayer damps vibration, so laminated glass reduces outside noise noticeably compared with older single-pane units — the effect is largest against traffic and aircraft. The interlayer also blocks the large majority of ultraviolet light, which slows fading of floors, furniture and artwork. And because the opening is permanently protected, there is nothing to deploy when a storm is forecast.

How much noise reduction you get depends on the specific glass build. Ask for the manufacturer's acoustic data for the exact configuration being quoted rather than accepting a general claim.

How to verify what you are buying

Look for a permanent etching or label on the glass identifying the manufacturer and approval. Ask for the approval number and check that it covers the configuration and design pressure for your opening, not just the product family. And keep the documentation — you will want it for your wind mitigation inspection.
