Do impact windows reduce noise?

Yes, substantially — and it is the benefit South Florida homeowners mention most often without being asked. The plastic interlayer that holds laminated glass together also damps sound vibration passing through it, and it works particularly well on the mid-frequency range that carries traffic, aircraft and neighbourhood noise. No window is soundproof, and anyone selling one as such is overstating it.

Why lamination damps sound

Sound crossing a window makes the glass vibrate, and that vibration re-radiates into the room. A single pane transmits this efficiently. It also has a resonant frequency at which it is especially transparent to sound — a weak point in its performance.

A laminated pane behaves differently. The soft plastic interlayer between the two glass layers is viscoelastic: as the glass flexes, the interlayer shears and converts some of that mechanical energy into a very small amount of heat. Energy that becomes heat does not become sound in your living room. The interlayer also damps the resonance, flattening out the frequency at which an ordinary pane performs worst.

This is why laminated glass outperforms an equivalent thickness of ordinary glass acoustically, and why it is used for that reason alone in buildings that have no hurricane requirement at all.

STC, OITC, and which one to look at

Two ratings appear on specification sheets. STC, Sound Transmission Class, is the older and more common one, developed largely for interior partitions and weighted toward speech frequencies. OITC, Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class, was developed specifically for exterior facades and weights the low frequencies more heavily — engine noise, aircraft, distant traffic rumble.

For a window in an exterior wall, OITC is the more honest number, and it is usually several points lower than the STC for the same unit. A manufacturer quoting only STC is quoting the flattering figure. Ask for both.

Treat either as a comparison tool between products rather than as a promise about your living room. The rating is measured in a laboratory on the glazing alone. What you experience also depends on the installation seal, the wall construction, and whether sound is arriving through your roof, your doors and your soffit vents — which, once the windows are good, it increasingly is.

What actually changes the result

Thicker glass performs better than thinner, and asymmetric construction performs better than symmetric — two panes of different thickness resonate at different frequencies, so neither one's weak point lines up with the other's. Laminated units are frequently built asymmetrically for exactly this reason.

An insulated laminated unit, with a sealed air gap in addition to the interlayer, performs better again, and a wider gap helps more than an inert gas fill does acoustically. It costs more and weighs more, which matters for hardware on large operable units.

Operating style matters more than people expect. A fixed window seals continuously around its whole perimeter and consistently outperforms an operable one of identical glazing. Among operable styles, a casement that clamps shut against its seal performs better than a slider running in a track, because a track cannot seal as completely.

And the seal at the perimeter of the installation matters as much as any of it. A gap in the sealant is an air path, and an air path is a sound path — which is one of the reasons a well-installed mid-range window can outperform a poorly installed premium one.

What to expect, honestly

Homeowners replacing single-pane aluminium windows — which is most of South Florida's pre-2002 housing stock — typically describe the change as dramatic rather than incremental. Traffic becomes a background presence instead of an event. Conversations and televisions in neighbouring properties stop being intelligible.

What does not disappear is low-frequency noise. Motorcycle exhaust, heavy vehicles, aircraft on approach and bass from a car stereo all carry energy at frequencies that no practical residential glazing stops. Expect these to be reduced and not eliminated.

Once the windows are done, whatever remains is arriving through the next weakest path. Very often that is the front door, a sliding patio door, or an uninsulated roof — which is worth knowing before you conclude the windows underperformed.
