What to know before choosing impact Entry Doors
A security decision as much as a storm one
An entry door is the one opening in the house that people try to get through deliberately. Impact-rated entry assemblies come with multi-point locking as standard — bolts engaging the frame at head, sill and strike rather than a single deadbolt — and reinforced strike plates. For most homeowners that is the benefit they notice year-round, well ahead of the wind rating they bought it for.
Slab material: fibreglass, steel or aluminium
Fibreglass is the usual specification in coastal South Florida: it does not corrode, holds dimensional stability through heat and humidity, and takes a wood-grain finish convincingly. Steel is lower cost and feels solid but can corrode at the edges near salt air, particularly where the finish is chipped. Aluminium-framed glazed entries suit modern elevations and pair naturally with impact sidelights and transoms. All three are available impact-rated; the choice is exposure, appearance and budget rather than protection.
What drives the cost
Whether it is a slab replacement or a full assembly. Replacing a door in an existing frame is a fraction of replacing the frame, sidelights and transom as an engineered assembly — and impact work is very often the latter, because the anchoring has to be demonstrated into the structure. Glass area, hardware grade and finish all move the number, and decorative glass in the slab adds meaningfully.
The threshold still decides the outcome
Like any door, an entry sits where water collects, and it needs a properly bedded sill pan with end dams. Entries additionally carry a threshold that people walk over thousands of times, so the sill has to manage water and wear at once. Adjustable thresholds are worth specifying, because a door that seals perfectly on install day and not two years later is usually a threshold height problem rather than a weatherstrip problem.
Where this is the wrong choice
Openings where the existing frame is sound and the budget is tight — a slab-only replacement may be adequate, though it forfeits the engineered anchoring that makes an assembly perform. Also not where an HOA or review board requires a specific configuration you have not confirmed.
