What to know before choosing impact Sliding Glass Doors
Panel weight is the whole engineering problem
Laminated impact glass runs roughly twice the weight of the single-pane unit being removed. On a slider that load moves — every day, through the rollers, the track and the interlock. A two-panel opening is straightforward. Three- and four-panel configurations, and anything over about twelve feet, need the header checked for deflection and frequently take a reinforced or structural mullion. Getting this wrong does not fail at inspection; it fails in year three when the door stops gliding.
Rollers decide how the door feels in five years
Tandem stainless rollers are what carry a heavy laminated panel smoothly over time, and within a few miles of the coast they are not optional — standard rollers pit and bind within two or three seasons of salt exposure. The track matters as much: an extruded aluminium sill holds tolerance under load in a way a lighter section does not. This is the single most common place where a cheaper quote costs more over the life of the door.
What drives the cost
Panel count and width first, then glass and hardware. A two-panel opening is a fraction of a four-panel one, and pocketing configurations — where panels disappear into a wall cavity — cost substantially more because the cavity has to be correct or the door will never sit flush. Structural work on the header, where required, is a separate line and we identify it at measurement rather than mid-job.
The sill pan is what protects your floor
A slider sits at the point in the wall where water collects. It needs a properly bedded sill pan under the threshold with end dams and a back leg, so anything that gets past the weatherstrip is directed back out rather than under your flooring. This is the most common shortcut in door installation and it does not reveal itself until the first hard wind-driven rain off open water. Every door we set gets a pan.
Where this is the wrong choice
Openings where the full width needs to open at once — a bi-fold or pocketing system does that and a conventional slider does not. Also poor value on narrow openings where a French pair gives better sightlines for similar money.
