What to know before choosing impact French Doors

The astragal is what inspectors check

A French pair has no fixed mullion between the two panels, so the assembly relies on an astragal on the inactive leaf with flush bolts top and bottom to transfer load into the head and sill. That astragal has to be rated as part of the tested assembly — not added afterwards, not substituted. It is the detail that fails inspection more often than anything else on impact door work, and it is why a French pair cannot be assembled from parts.

Full-width opening, at a cost

The advantage of a French pair over a slider is that both panels open, giving you the entire width rather than half of it, and the sightlines are cleaner because there is no overlapping interlock in the middle. The trade is swing clearance — the panels need unobstructed space inside or out — and generally higher cost per foot of opening than a slider of the same width.

What drives the cost

Width, glass, and whether sidelights or a transom are part of the assembly. Impact-rated sidelights and transoms are engineered with the door rather than added around it, so an assembly quote is not the door price plus glass. Hardware level matters more here than on most styles: multi-point locking is standard on impact French pairs and the finish grade makes a visible difference on an entry elevation.

A frequent choice in historic districts

In Coral Gables, West Palm Beach's El Cid and Flamingo Park, Delray's Del-Ida Park and Miami Beach's designated districts, original French doors are often a defining architectural feature. Review boards can govern panel proportion, muntin pattern and finish, so the job becomes reproducing existing sightlines in an impact-rated assembly rather than fitting a stock unit — and that review runs before the building permit, not alongside it.

Where this is the wrong choice

Openings with obstructed swing space on both sides. Also not the efficient choice for very wide spans, where a multi-panel slider covers the opening for less money per foot.
