My Safe Florida Home is funded in cycles by the Florida Legislature. The grant cap, the income bands and whether applications are open at all have all changed between cycles, and plenty of contractor pages about this program — including some ranking well right now — still describe rules that expired. Everything on this page is stated as of August 2026. The authority is the program itself: mysafeflhome.com . Check it before you plan around anything here.
What the program is
My Safe Florida Home pays a share of the cost of wind-mitigation improvements on eligible homesteaded Florida homes. Opening protection — impact windows, impact doors and rated garage doors — is one of the categories it covers, and for most South Florida homes it is the improvement with the largest effect on both storm resilience and insurance premium.
It is a grant rather than a loan. Nothing is repaid and nothing attaches to your property, which distinguishes it sharply from PACE financing, the other program homeowners often confuse it with. As of August 2026 the maximum is up to $10,000 per homeowner on a matching basis, the current cycle is limited to low and moderate income homeowners, and applications are processed in a priority queue by income band and age rather than in the order they arrive.
The free wind mitigation inspection is worth a mention on its own. Even homeowners who never proceed with a grant come out of it holding a professional assessment of exactly which improvements would harden their house and in what order — which is a genuinely useful document to have in hand before you spend anything.
How the process runs, in order
- 1
Check that applications are open
The program runs on funding cycles appropriated by the Florida Legislature and has opened and closed several times since it restarted. Before anything else, check the official site — it posts whether the application window is open and which applicant categories it is currently serving.
- 2
Apply and join the queue
Applications are processed by the Department of Financial Services in priority order rather than first-come-first-served. As of this page's date, priority runs by income band and age: low-income applicants aged 60 and over first, then low-income under 60, then moderate-income aged 60 and over, then moderate-income under 60.
- 3
Take the free wind mitigation inspection
A state-arranged inspector visits your home and produces a wind mitigation report identifying which improvements would harden it — opening protection, roof-to-wall connections, roof covering and so on. The inspection is free and it is what your grant scope is built from. It is worth having even if you never proceed with the grant.
- 4
Get quotes from approved contractors
You choose your own contractor, but the program requires an approved one — reimbursement depends on it, so confirm approved status before you sign anything. ClearView is an approved My Safe Florida Home contractor. The products must also meet Florida Product Approval or, in Miami-Dade and Broward, Miami-Dade NOA. We quote grant scopes the same way we quote anything else: itemised, from a real measure, with the approval documents attached.
- 5
Get the grant approved before you start
This is the step people get wrong, and it is expensive. Work started before your grant is approved is generally not reimbursable. Do not let any contractor talk you into beginning early to hold a price or a slot.
- 6
Complete the work and submit for reimbursement
Once approved, the work is completed, inspected and permitted normally, and the reimbursement is claimed with the required documentation. We supply the permit close-out, product approval paperwork and invoices in the form the program asks for.
The grant and the insurance credit are two different things
Homeowners routinely treat these as one benefit. They are not. The grant reduces what you pay for the work once. The wind mitigation credit reduces the windstorm portion of your homeowners insurance premium at every renewal for as long as the openings are protected — and it is triggered by the inspection form your carrier receives, entirely independently of whether a grant was involved.
