Why casements seal better under pressure
A casement is hinged at the side and cranks outward, so when it closes it compresses against the frame gasket around the full perimeter. A sliding or hung sash instead relies on brush and fin seals as it passes. Under wind pressure that difference is real: a casement is pushed harder into its seal as pressure rises, which is why it typically posts the best air infiltration numbers of any operable style and why it is worth specifying on the most exposed elevation of a coastal property.
Full opening, and what that means for egress
A casement opens the entire sash area — there is no fixed half. On a marginal bedroom that is often the difference between meeting the 5.7 sq ft egress minimum and needing masonry work, which can make a casement cheaper overall than a hung window plus opening enlargement. It also catches side breezes and directs them inward in a way a hung window cannot.
What drives the cost
Casement costs more per square foot than hung or roller units. The hinges, the multi-point locking hardware and the crank operator are all more substantial, and the sash has to be built to carry laminated glass while cantilevered off side hinges. On whole-house scopes most projects specify casements selectively — windward elevations, marginal egress bedrooms, over kitchen counters where reach matters — rather than throughout.
Clearance is the practical constraint
A casement swings outward, so it needs unobstructed space beyond the opening. Walkways, patios, screened enclosures, air-conditioning equipment and dense landscaping all conflict with it, and on a narrow side yard a casement can be impractical regardless of how well it performs. That is worth identifying at measurement rather than on install day.
Where this is the wrong choice
Openings onto walkways, patios or narrow side yards where the outward swing conflicts with something. Also a poor fit for very wide openings, where a single casement sash becomes unwieldy and a roller or fixed-plus-casement combination works better.
