About Impact Garage Doors
The garage door is the largest opening in most Florida houses and the one most likely to fail first. When it goes, the house pressurises from the inside while the wind passing over the roof lowers the pressure above it, and the roof is pushed up and pulled up at the same time. We install Amarr garage doors, specified to the wind load your address actually requires and, in the wind-borne debris region, impact rated rather than pressure rated alone.

What to know before choosing impact Garage Doors
The largest opening in most houses
A double garage door is typically the biggest single opening in the building envelope, and in a wind event it is the one that matters most. If it fails, wind enters and pressurises the structure from inside, which is how roofs come off — the door is not just protecting the garage, it is protecting the whole house. That is why wind mitigation credit assessments look specifically at garage door rating, and why an unrated garage door can undermine the credit for a house with every other opening protected.
Bracing, tracks and the opener
Impact-rated garage doors carry heavier reinforcing struts across the panels and heavier-gauge tracks and hardware than a standard door, because the assembly has to resist both positive pressure pushing in and negative pressure pulling out. That extra weight often means the existing opener is undersized, so opener replacement or a spring recalculation is frequently part of the job rather than an upsell. The tracks and jamb anchoring are engineered with the door.
What drives the cost
Width and rating first, then panel style and windows. A single door is substantially less than a double. Insulated panels add cost and are worth it on an attached garage sharing a wall with conditioned space. Decorative glazing adds more and reduces the rating options available, so on high-pressure elevations the choice narrows.
Where it sits in a whole-house scope
The wind mitigation insurance credit is assessed on the whole structure, every opening protected — so a house with impact windows and doors throughout and an unrated garage door frequently does not qualify. If the budget forces phasing, the garage door is usually a poor thing to leave until last, because it can hold up the credit for everything else already installed.
Where this is the wrong choice
Detached garages not sharing structure with the house, where the protection argument is weaker and the credit does not apply. Also not worth doing alone if the rest of the openings will stay unrated.
