What to know before choosing impact Picture windows

No moving parts, and that is the point

A picture window is fixed — it does not open. That removes the hardware, the balances, the operating seals and every air infiltration path a moving sash creates, which makes it the best-sealing and cheapest impact unit per square foot by a clear margin. It also allows the slimmest sightlines, because there is no operating sash inside the frame, so more of the opening is glass.

The cheapest way to add impact protection at scale

On homes with large front-elevation spans or two-storey glass, picture units are why whole-house impact packages often price better than homeowners expect. Those big openings look like they should be the expensive part and are frequently the cheapest per square foot in the scope. Pairing large fixed spans with a smaller operable unit alongside is a common and cost-effective configuration.

What drives the cost

Glass area and glass type, almost entirely. Because there is no hardware, the cost curve is flatter than any operable style. Low-E is disproportionately worth specifying on large fixed spans, because a big pane of clear laminated glass on a west elevation transmits a great deal of heat and there is no operating cost to trade against.

Where it cannot go

A picture window cannot serve as a bedroom egress opening, because it does not open. Every bedroom needs at least one operable unit meeting the 5.7 sq ft clear opening minimum regardless of how much fixed glass is in the room — a point that catches people out on rooms with a large picture window and one small original casement that no longer complies. It also provides no ventilation, so rooms relying on natural airflow need an operable unit somewhere.

Where this is the wrong choice

Any bedroom without a separate compliant egress opening, and any room where natural ventilation matters. Also worth avoiding on upper storeys where cleaning the exterior is otherwise impossible.

FAQ — Picture windows

Common questions about picture impact windows

Yes. Picture impact windows carry the same Florida Product Approval and Miami-Dade NOA certifications as operable windows. In fact, because they have no operating hardware, fixed picture windows often achieve the highest design pressure ratings available.
